Futures – Holiday EP

By paul

I remember seeing Tonight Is Goodbye at Slam Dunk Fest on the UK Now stage, and while I really enjoyed them on record, I was blown away with the live show. They upstaged pretty much every band on the bill that day, they were that good. A few short months later they called it quits and it seemed a potential talent would be wasted. Up stepped Futures, featuring ex-members of TIG, with a refined sound. Truth be told Futures are better in every single way and this EP is going to set them apart from all of the more established acts doing this kind of thing. Kids In Glass Houses apart, I doubt there’s a band doing this style of music any better.

The band play a poppy brand of pop rock that is both punchy and catchy in equal measure. It’s very polished and slick, but you need to be at this level. ’16’ is a monster of an opening track, all stomping drums and a violent bundle of energy. It sums up what this band do really, really well, which is to write a very catchy hook and build everything around it. ‘Take Me Home’ has a massive chorus which is well worth waiting for, while ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ should be the single which breaks them onto mainstream A-list radio play. To be fair every song had redeeming features; most are excellent all the way through.

If you’re looking for a band that’s catchy, energetic and homegrown, look no further than Futures. If you liked Tonight Is Goodbye, you’ll love this new incarnation. With choruses as big as ‘Holiday’, the future is very bright indeed.
