So as a rule of thumb, we don’t review singles. However, I want to make an exception because if anyone deserves our support, it’s Sam. For those of you living under a rock, Sam Duckworth is Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, formerly of Big Scary Monsters and now of Atlantic Records. This is his first single for a major and is backed with a Billy Bragg cover and a re-worked version of an old track. There’s no need for any kind of long review, the simple fact is that people need to go out and support young British talent like Sam and buy this single.
Any long-time reader of the site knows how much we love GCWCF, so I don’t need to spend too long stating his one-man socially-aware acoustic tales complete with beats, samples and now a variety of different instruments, make him one of the UK’s best rising stars. ‘Call Me Ishmael‘ actually took me a few spins before it finally settled on me, but once it grows it will refuse to budge from your brain – two-thirds of the way in when the song speeds up, now that’s genius. ‘I Spy’ sounds better than ever with Sam’s vocals raspier and the musicianship more crisp – the song is beefed up, sounding how I guess it was always meant to sound. And the cover, well, typical Sam – makes it sound like his own song. Just stop wasting time reading this review and go out and support top UK talent.
