Hang the Bastard – Hellfire Reign

By Tom Aylott

Holy Roar have a fantastic eye for great no-nonsense whateverthefuckyouwantocallitcore, and Hang the Bastard, are as fine an example as any on the roster.

Hellfire Reign, with its aptronymic title and fairly gruesome artwork, see the band tear through 10 songs of brutal guitar work and subtle structural intricacies like a bull in a china shop, and by ‘Snakecharmer’ (track 6), you’re fully immersed in the dark and angry world they’ve put together.

‘Hells Teeth’ is absolutely brilliant, and it’s either that or ‘The Blackest Eyes‘ for the best of the ten, but it’s great throughout and well worth a listen.

The production fits the band like a glove, and the whole record comes off sounding like a live performance (in all the good ways). If you’re even vaguely even into “heavy music”, there’s going to be things you’ll like about Hang the Bastard, and Hellfire Reign is a great record to kick 2011 off with.
