From what I can establish (kudos to the band for supplying no info whatsoever – I like bands who offer a challenge more than those who offer a book of quotes from shite magazines that may or may not have been about them) Hello Mexico are the new act from a bunch of blokes from hardcore bands. What ones, I’m not entirely sure. But, it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that it is, therefore, post-hardcore in the truest sense – a desire to do something a little bit differently after touring out your old band.
The 5 tunes on offer here are not evidence of simply another band at the arse end of the metalcore revolution, (let’s be honest, a revolution that has led most people to just come full circle back to Converge.) This is an altogether more chilled out affair. There’s some Fall of Troy in here, there’s a whole lot of choir like backing vocals and there is a nice, relaxed pace about it all. At times it drags, but if you could imagine Karate trying to play hardcore, you’d probably get this.
Maybe it lacks a certain something, a real hook to remind you what you just listened to, but this is very much a case of different gravy. Which is very, very much needed.
