For a band featuring ex-members of Dynamite, Grey Area, Lifetime, Black Train Jack, Paint It Black, None More Black and Good Riddance, Higher Giant are surprisingly melodic. I don’t really think they sound like any of the above, except maybe in the vocals which have the urgency and passion of the likes of Lifetime. And that’s very much a good thing.
This record has been released on Runner Up in the US, the same label which has put out the new Dave House record over there, and it’s very, very good. ‘Friday The 13th’ is a blast, while ‘The Dealer’ has hooks big enough to land a whale. The guitar tones actually reminds me a little of ‘Through Being Cool’-era Saves The Day, especially in that song. It’s that type of tempo, not really the same sound-wise. To be honest every song here is worth a listen; there are some big melodies, overblown solos and singalong vocals too. Overall this is a great little EP and one well worth picking up, either on vinyl or digitally.
