Hit The Lights – Invicta (EP)

By Tom Aylott

On first impressions, ‘Invicta’, the new EP from HIT THE LIGHTS is lazy. Lazy in the way that it’s barely ten minutes long, lazy in the way that it’s got the same name as the album that it precedes, but most of lazy because the songwriting comes off as a bit lazy.

It feels a bit like it consists of three slower songs you’d put up with on an album because of the “bangers” found elsewhere, so despite the short length it drags a bit.

BUT, a few listens at a decent volume and it does stand on its own much, much more capably. Hit The Lights still have a knack for a decent melody, and though this isn’t their best release to date and a general upping of the tempo on the album would do them a WORLD of good, it’s not bad as a bit of a precursor to more material.

‘Invicta’ really is what it is, and though it’s probably going to rub a few of the wrong way, it’s clear that there was plenty of love put into it – we’re just hoping the album has a few more balls out moments.
