Human Project – Trials

By Tom Aylott

Three years, two personnel overhauls, and one name change. Things have been rather busy for THE HUMAN PROJECT (so long Nana’s Revenge) since their previous release, ‘Man Down’, in 2008. The band returns with ‘Trials’, a seven track EP of tech-laced, melodic punk-rock.

‘Trials’ picks up where its predecessor left off. This time round though, it sounds somewhat more accomplished and with an identity of its own. Those comparisons to Failsafe that haunted the band both live and on recording are no longer as prevalent. Instead we get a band wearing its influences on its sleeve (hints of Propagandhi are widespread) but delivering its own sound.

Buzzsaw riffs split time with intricate guitars generating a layered effect that sees the band switch from full-throttle to calm intelligence at the drop of a hat. This is more measured and fuller than before, no doubt a result of life on the road with the likes of Strung Out and Dead To Me. Whilst it’s a well-constructed offering, you still can’t help but hope the band breaks out that big tune. You sense that The Human Project has it in them to pen a monster of a song, bigger, faster, and capable of clawing into the consciousness of even the most resolute listener.

‘Trials’ is a welcome return to a band that undoubtedly has talent and style, yet still search for that sucker-punch of a song. Intelligent and sophisticated, both musically and lyrically, this is for fans of the likes of Chief, Ignite, and Propagandhi. If you like your excellently executed melodic punk-rock, this should be on your shopping list.
