Japanese Voyeurs – Yolk

By Tom Aylott

It’s a bit hard to put Japanese Voyeurs in genre box, but it’s somewhere between grunge/riot grrl/post-hardcore. Let’s just say it’s fucking noisy with female vocals for now and you’ll get the picture.

‘Yolk’ is the band’s debut record, and considering the high profile supports they’ve wrangled so far, it’s definitely time for them to start making their mark.

Despite temptation, it’ll be best to proceed with a handful of lazy comparisons, but basically: Japanese Voyeurs stand firmly within the heavier grunge revival that’s going on at the moment, but do manage to set themselves apart by managing to be uplifting at the same time as moody.

It’s the heavier end of punk done with pretty emphatic style, and from bristly opener ‘You’re So Cool’ to the downright creepy ‘Feed’.

The band will continue to receive Nirvana, Hole et al comparisons, and they’ve got a way to go to go past that, but they’ve definitely got a fire in the belly that should see them make their own way in good time – not least due to a particularly nasal vocal style that goes a long way to piercing a tiny little hole in your soul.
