The new three track Latin for Truth EP sees them changing style around from their debut album and sounding like a sort of a poor man’s Set Your Goals. That might over-simplify things a bit, but somehow the band’s mash of beatdown, faster pop punk and split gruff / higher range vocals feels quite predictable, despite not ever really going anywhere.
It’s a bit of a classic case of a band chucking things together to please a spectrum of people without making a comfort zone for themselves, and you’d hope that the upcoming album would see them put a few stylistic roots down. Where similar bands manage not to come off as taking themselves too seriously, Latin For Truth come off sounding like they are trying too hard. It means the better moments end up framed by a lot of forced and predictable moments, and it’s a bit of a shame as there’s the musicianship, in particular the drums, is strong throughout.
