Marmozets – Passive Aggressive

By Tom Aylott

From those heartless vast oceans swimming with the self-assured and dogshit filled shoals of the underground scene, a wave breaks to shore every now and again that washes up something truly excellent.

Marmozets, averaging a jealousy inducing seventeen years old, sound somewhere in between Be Your Own Pet, Blakfish and the Fall of Troy, and have sprung an EP/Mini Album that is, well, nothing short of brilliant.

There’s a fantastic mix of the melodic and the heavy across the record, but not in the formulaic ‘singy verse/shouty chorus’ way. It’s more that there’s genuine attention to detail into things like dynamics and structure, which is all the more impressive considering the volume of bands a decade their senior that can barely manage it.

Single ‘Lives’, and ‘My Friend’ probably show off the range of the band best from the release, but Passive Aggressive’s tidy half an hour of music is beautifully sparing with clichés, and is the sort of record that has the quality to stir faith in a whole new generation of bands.

Marmozet’s potential is mind boggling, and this seven tracker is a startlingly cohesive effort from a band that with any justice whatsoever, will be all over the rest of 2011 like a wonderful rash.
