Midday Committee – ‘Girls In Open C’

By admin

It’s the time of year where new album releases are vetted depending on whether they’re summer soundtracks or not. Fortunately for those seeking long drive anthems and albums of a more sunny nature, ‘Girls in Open C’ ticks all the boxes of a summer classic, keeping things up-tempo and not too deep, with plenty of sing-along moments. ‘Girls in Open C’ is certainly not ground-breaking, the riffs have all been heard before, the delivery and call-and-return sections could have been lifted from a Lower Than Atlantis album and the song topics are like reading through a pop-punk theme checklist. There’s a break-up anthem or two, a song about running away, a love song with some heavy-handed gambling and card-playing metaphors and yet another love song with female guest vocals. Of course, doing things by the book doesn’t necessarily make an album bad, and part of ‘Midday Committee’s’ appeal is their familiarity. They may not be breaking any boundaries, but ‘Girls in Open C’ is engaging and has plenty of repeat play value without being too taxing. Songs like ‘Hometowns’ and ‘Maybe I Should’ are unbearably catchy, and it’s virtually impossible not to scream, “I’ve got the last two tickets, last two tickets out of here” in ‘Games Been Called’. The only misstep is ‘Just Me and You’, which is dated and overdone, easily making it the low point of the album. These shared girl and boy perspective songs have been plaguing releases since A Day to Remember’s If It Means A Lot to You, and their done-to-death nature means that this effort could have easily been left off without detracting from the album. Midday Committee’s ‘Girl’s in Open C’ is a fun slice of disposable pop-punk – fluffy, upbeat and ultimately forgettable. ‘Girls in Open C’ is guaranteed to find itself on plenty of summer playlists, though probably not on any album of the year lists.
