More Than You’ll Ever Know – S/T EP

By paul

Formed in April 2009 with members of The Aperture and Time to Leave, Wakefield quartet More Than You’ll Ever Know show plenty of signs they could do well for themselves. This four-tracker is full of really good ideas and while not all of them work, I’d much rather listen to a band who try (and sometimes fail) to do something a little more interesting than a band who just chucks in synth, keys or dance beats because it’s fashionable. Take ‘What Are You Waiting For?’, for instance, a track that would be better suited to opening the EP with an instrumental intro. It lasts too long at 45 seconds, but shows the band have at least thought about song structures and showing their versatility. The song is also about a minute too long but the “hands in the air” refrain and gang vocals sound really good. It doesn’t quite work as a full song, but there are ideas that, separately, sound impressive.

MTYEK are a pop-punk band at heart although I couldn’t quite put my finger on influences. They’re not poppy enough for the All Time Low crowd or quick enough for the New Found Glory crowd. But they’re on to something, for sure. ‘Something New’ again hints at good ideas but doesn’t quite execute them to the standard of the better bands in the genre. But with some spit and polish, and plenty of practice, I’m sure the band will be able to take their excellent ideas and mould them into great songs.
