Noise Abatement Act – Demo 2004

By

It seems there is a growing number of cases in the U.K which effect all music fans around the age of 16. The “join a band” syndrome. Where as, 3 or 4 girls, or in this case, boys, get together for the love of music, with little starting talent, and dream about following their heroes step by step. And so they save up, by instruments, teach themselves a few covers, do a few shows, write their own stuff, and prepare to hit the big time… Here we have a similar situation, Noise Abatement Act, four young lads from London taking the influences of NOFX and Green Day and knocking out 3 minute pop-punk songs. EVERYONE knows a similar tale. It’s all down to persistence whether or not these kids break through, fact is, so many bands are out there doing the same thing, for the record labels and promoters, it’s just a case of the weak will fall and only the strong remain.

Their demo as it stands is a rough and poorly produced 3 track, which to be fair to it, I have enjoyed listening to. Vocally, it’s encouraging, plenty of harmonies and well worked melodies as seen towards the end of track 1, “They Say.” As are the guitar lines and song structures, lots of different techniques, plenty of break downs, and a few catchy moments which will do me fine from any young up and coming band. Fact is mixing isn’t the best. A lack of bass drum in the mix and a quite restrained sound overall means the general “attack” of the CD lacks, and you can’t really pump up the volume without getting a load of fuzz come through.

Never the less, I’m sure Noise Abatement Act will be well aware of this, and if they are a band who are seriously planning on going somewhere, will have planned, or even been into the studio again, and learnt from their initial errors. Underneath lack of bass and in amongst a few rookie errors, are good foundations for a band, local pop-punk fans may well want to check these guys out.
