Overthrow – A Ghost In The Machine

By Andy

2007’s The Withdrawal Of Reason blew our minds on first listen. The follow up EP – 2008’s So Much Power, So Little Time we called ‘a masterpiece’. With Overthrow‘s latest effort, don’t expect the hyperboles to stop flowing – A Ghost In The Machine is their most accomplished and stunning release to date.

‘By Night We Escape’ kick starts the machine with a thumping, raucous chorus that feels like a band revitalised. With a brand new drummer and a frontman infinitely more confident than ever in his vocal delivery, there’s no letting up through the initial four minutes, and ‘Cut Loose’ continues in much the same confidence. Where they’ve dropped the chaotic rhythms and over-indulgent breakdowns of their earlier material, ‘Doublespeak’ is the most vivd reminder that there’s still incredible musicianship flowing through the veins of this lot. It may be more straight up rock than the ska fever they suffered in days of old, but the drumming is crisp, the guitars razor sharp, the individual parts as impressive as the sum of the whole.

If you missed our stream of A Ghost In The Machine you can head over to the band’s Myspace to check it out now. We seriously recommend you do because Overthrow are genuinely one of the most talented bands this country has to offer at the minute, you just probably don’t know it yet.
