Plain White Tees – Wonders of the Younger

By Tom Aylott

Plain White T’s have seemingly struggled to capitalise on that hit single, and you can’t help but feel like it’s going to take something really special to restore faith after what was, frankly, not the best album in history in the form of ‘Big Bad World’.

‘Wonders of the Younger’ is squeaky clean effort from a band trying to reestablish themselves. It’s often sonically somewhere between Jimmy Eat World and Jack Johson (that’s most definitely not a dig either), and though there’s absolutely no way that this will end up being a genre classic, there’s some genuinely lovely well thought out music within.

The back end of the album labours the theme of the record a bit, but there’s plenty of meat and songs like ‘Boomerang’ and ‘Last Breath’ just about make up for it.

Though a record that needs a bit of patience, and that’s perhaps landed just the wrong side of summer, ‘The Wonders of the Younger, might just be able to help you shake off a winter blue or two if you shut your eyes and pretend for a bit. It’s not going to change the world, but it’s not going to make it a worse place either – Plain White T’s have a knack for the catchy, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a sugary melody now and again, right?
