Population Four – This Town Will Drag You Down

By paul

I remember reviewing this band about 18 months ago and being quite impressed by their Funeral For A Friend-esque sound. I looked back and wrote how ‘big’ the band sounded and they again manage to replicate that effect on new EP ‘This Town Will Drag You Down’. There’s a small vocal effect which reminds me of Boy Sets Fire at times; there’s a very, very clean vocal on a couple of tracks and it suits the band well. When they resort to screaming and shouting they come across like every other band in the genre and it’s a bit predictable, boring and, well, 2004. The band are much better suited to singing not screaming. They can write intelligent and interesting music and some impressive metal-esque riffs, they just don’t need to do what everyone else does and scream their way through song after song. This is a decent EP and worth checking out, but I would certainly enjoy this more if the band didn’t resort to the obvious tricks of the trade a little bit too often.
