Silverstein – Discovering The Waterfront

By paul

I quite like Silverstein. Their last record did suffer from a number of genre cliches – and to a certain extent may have been lost amongst some of their peers – but overall it was well executed. Sure, some of the screams may have been overrused and the song structures could have been ripped from any one of the A Static Hawthorne Heights clones that have plagued the music world, but for me there was a sense Silverstein were on the right lines. Two reasonably successful UK tours and 200,000 album sales worldwide suggest the band are certainly on the right lines.

‘Discovering The Waterfront’ is the follow-up to ‘When Broken Is Easily Fixed’ and doesn’t stray too far from its predecessor. The songs are arguably more melodic, and the screaming used more sparingly, so that can only be a good thing. True, there’s very little new ground to break with this kind of music, but as Silverstein did first time round, they managed to pull off a CD that sounds pretty good, without ever sounding really good. ‘Smile In Your Sleep’ and the album’s title track stick out – but then to be fair to the band none of the tracks here are particularly bad. I quite enjoyed Silverstein before and my opinion hasn’t really changed too much. A solid, if unspectacular album that’s worth checking out.
