Siren Lake – Stars and silver lined clouds

By paul

While it’s not always that easy to carry off, it’s always pleasing to see and hear bands that aren’t afraid to take an ailing genre and do their bit to try and shake it up a bit. Siren Lake are touring a Hell of a lot right now – always a good thing – and their Glassjaw/post-hardcore hybrid sound is refreshing in the sense it’s not a carbon copy of what sounds ‘new’ to many Kerrang! readers. At times this 3-tracker sounds a little messy – a jack of all trades is better than a master of none, even if it gets a little muddled at times – but you have to give a band credit for trying to stand out a little. ‘Turn It Up’ for example, showcases some quite impressive dynamics. It’s too early to say if Siren Lake can impose themselves forcefully on a genre that definitely needs a kick up the arse, but for a three-tracker this shows promise – and a hint of originality.
