Smaller Than You – S/T

By paul

Smaller Than You are a good old fashioned ska punk band. They remind me of the bands Good Clean Fun Recs used to put out. There’s a little early Howards Alias in there too. It’s refreshing in a non-refreshing way, mainly because you don’t hear too many bands doing this type of thing anymore. Chuck in the fact these guys are all 17 years old and you’ve got a talented band doing pretty good things. And while I’ll freely admit I stopped listening to ska about 5 years ago, I can spot a talented band a mile off and these guys certainly have something in their locker.

‘Who Knew’ mixes up the pace, nicely drops in some brass and has everything in and around the right place. You could argue that the track is a little long – and that’s a criticism I could aim at the band as most of their songs are the wrong side of 3 and a half minutes – but as with ‘Can You Hear me’ the band can mix up laid back with frenetic without ever sounding too forced or obvious. If you’re after checking out some new talent, Smaller Than You would be well worth a look.
