This here 3 songs 7” is the first actual new stuff put out since the band reformed – so it’s the first new tunes from this lot in 20 years. Needless to say I wasn’t quite old enough for them first time around – but when I got sent one of the reissued albums (Violent Nun) for review, I was fucking impressed, so I was happy when this dropped through my letterbox.
The 7” itself is pretty cool – my copy is pink and white marble, nice and kitsch. The tunes on it are pretty much what you’d expect if you have the old stuff – more polished, but the same producer, similar sound and something that not a lot of bands manage to pull off. The Stupids were never easy listening – its punk played by hardcore kids – and the new tunes probably sound more like TSOL than they did back in the 80s.
These 3 songs are just a taster for an album coming later in the year (so naturally its shortness is a bit frustrating), but if you have no experience of the Stupids, go get it, have a listen and it may just get you hooked. It fills a hole that not too many bands even try to fill these days – I, for one, am well looking forward to seeing them play with the HardOns in a few days time.
