Everyone likes a few bonus tracks and extra stuff on their CDs these days. It makes the choice between actually paying for your music or just nicking it, bit torrent stylee, that bit easier. Well, the hardest working label in the UK, perhaps the universe, Boss Tuneage, has added a fair few bonus tracks to this re-release of the Stupids‘ Violent Nun EP. 17 songs to be precise. So, what you get with this here album is 25 tracks from a band who make up the rich heritage of this country’s punk rock history.
This is an absolute joy to review. It’s one of 4 reissues of the Stupids‘ 1980s back-catalogue, before Boss Tuneage puts out a brand new EP at the end of the year. It’s American influenced thrashy skate-punk, with the production of TSOL and that lovely, slightly ambient 1980s reverb sound. The difference between listening to the Stupids and most of the bands on the soundtrack to ‘American Hardcore’ is that they wrote decent tunes. It’s still real nice to hear the tunes now. Sure, there is a bit of New Wave baiting and the like which don’t mean much to many people these days, but this lot were clearly a fine band. Invest some cash in this one.
