Tat – TAT

By paul

I had the pleasure of catching a couple of songs by this four-piece back in January. I was rather impressed back then, but to six months later have their CD land on my doorstep and to instantly be able to remember the choruses is somewhat remarkable. I get the impression TAT are more of an industry type band than your usually D.I.Y band and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see this lot on alternative music channels with a chart bothering CD single available in your local Woolworths in the not too distant future. But if this happens it will be part the fact they have a push from the right people but mainly because the three tracks on this CD are some of the catchiest pop songs I’ve heard in ages.

TAT are fronted by the charismatic sounding Tatiana DeMaria her vocals remind me in some ways of Cerys Matthews of CATATONIA fame and the bittersweet and often self critical lyrics seem reminiscent of ALANIS MORRISETTE. Musically the three tracks are a blend of radio friendly pop-punk with a little bit of a ska influence thrown in here and there. You can kick and scream all day how these sorts of bands aren’t ‘scene’ enough or whatever but when you have choruses to die for on top of perfectly structured pop songs I don’t really care.

I myself am not normally one to go for this at all and I would usually find myself slating this CD but I just can’t; it’s that addictive. Whilst at times it can be a bit cringey (see the ‘Oi Oi’ bit in ‘Live for Rock’ I keep coming back for more. Whether it’s Tatiana’s voice, the massive hooks, the subtle yet clever riffs or the unpretentiousness I just don’t know but there’s just something about this band which is knocking me over again and again. If BUSTED and MCFLY can rack up hits like there’s no tomorrow, there’s no reason why TAT cannot and should not.
