TWS remind me of Mae playing The Rocket Summer tunes. It’s a gentle, melodic brand of key-driven pop-punk that’s catchy and nice, but ultimately sounds a little bland. ‘Down, But Not Out’ has plenty of nice moments and I can see the band getting a lot of fans off the back of this EP. But truth be told we’ve heard it all a million times before. The vocals – while performed to a high standard – are totally identikit soundalike vox. They could belong to any singer from any similar band in the scene. There’s nothing to distinguish this band from any other. ‘Backdownlady’ is a decent tune; it’s a solid song that drifts along with a decent vocal, catchy chorus and quirky synth. But the hook, while attracting a nibble, isn’t big enough to land a whale. And therein lies the problem, That Was Something are good but never great. Consistently slightly above average is about the best press quote I can give.
