The Gap Year Riot – These Streets Never Sleep

By paul

The Gap Year Riot! are a piano-infused, rock/pop 5 piece from Glasgow and this EP was recorded with John Mitchell at Outhouse Studios (You Me At Six, Enter Shikari). You can tell too as the four songs on this record are very slick and very polished. You can tell this band are aiming high and I have no doubt they will get there – eventually. This record isn’t quite good enough for the big time, but it’s obvious they have all the right assets. Let’s get one thing straight though – this is very much a pop-rock record that focuses on melodies rather than riffs. If you like Strike Anywhere then you won’t like this band. It’s more for the Elliot Minor crowd. And ‘Win Win’ and ‘3 + 3’ are excellent examples of tracks that feature a piano and some melodic vocals and choruses. I wouldn’t expect anyone who likes the harsher elements of the Punktastic spectrum to like this band, but they’re good at what they do and at what they do is pretty popular right now…
