The Social Club – Drinking

By Tom Aylott

Remember Weezer? Not the Weezer of late, but the Weezer of the late-90s? Yes? In that case you may find yourself overfamiliar with THE SOCIAL CLUB‘s current effort. Not necessarily a negative observation considering the quality of the Weezer releases in question; ‘Drinking EP’ falling somewhere between ‘The Green Album’ and lesser effort ‘Make Believe’. It may seem unfair to make such blatant comparisons between two artists; however in this case the comparison is a fitting tribute to the EP in question as opposed to an outright condemnation.

THE SOCIAL CLUB have taken what Weezer do (or arguably: did) best. ‘Drinking EP’ is filled with catchy hooks and melodies, guitar riffs that hint at grunge, and humorous yet ultimately dejected lyrics. The lead vocals, although reflective of River Cuomo’s trademark style, are filled with a raw edge that helps to create a necessary distinction. More importantly, what elevates these five tracks above those of their kin is the sheer enjoyment portrayed in every note, drum beat and guitar riff. THE SOCIAL CLUB are loving every moment.

Although comparable to other bands, THE SOCIAL CLUB have created what they no-doubt set out to achieve. Exactly as you would expect from a band with such a moniker, the EP is fun and enigmatic. THE SOCIAL CLUB have unashamedly taken the best moments from their favourite bands and marked their own stamp thereupon. ‘Drinking EP’ is likely to induce nostalgia in the listener, and in some senses plays like the best Weezer album of the last ten years; take that as you will.
