So the story goes that Avebury Records found The Studiofix on MySpace and quickly snapped them up, before letting them go off into a recording studio and coming up with this album. The accompanying press release describes the girls, from “The Real OC”, as “a traditional rock n roll band that looks at the basic genre from a completely fresh perspective”. But from the CD I’m listening to, I really don’t see what this ‘fresh perspective’ is. Their three-chord punk sounds a little washed up in places, and the vocals are often scratchy – just like their ideas.
But among the borrowed riffs and basic songs are a couple of gems that almost, just almost, salvages this from the scrapheap. There are some sweet melodies here among the buzzsaw guitars, and tracks like ‘Sleeping’ and ‘Bag Lady’ have a little bit of charm amongst the bubblegum-esque pop-punk. At times this is sloppy and rushed, but if this had of been squashed down to a 5-track EP, I definitely think I’d be upping this mark by a star. There are too many tracks here – too much filler, not enough killer – and that’s why I won’t be taking too much of a close interest into what The Studiofix get up to next.
