The Summer Team – 4-track EP

By paul

If The Summer Team can sort out the vocals they really could be big. Like, super big. With a sound more akin to Son of Dork than New Found Glory – although influenced by both – the band write absolutely huge songs begging to be played on the radio. The first song on this EP has an absolutely enormous melody which is as good as any UK pop-punk band I’ve heard in ages – the musicianship is to a very high level, the production nicely polished. But the vocals just don’t quite cut the mustard – they’re not bad, but they’re not quite slick enough to match the rest of the band. And ultimately that’s why The Summer Team aren’t riding high in the charts.

Each of the four tracks here shows so much promise I’m convinced if they can iron out a few problems they really could make an impact. At times they’re possibly a little too sickly sweet – track two sounds like a Busted cast off – but when the band pick up the pace they do sound pretty good. If the vocals can find some range – they’re currently very flat and a little tuneless – then expect The Summer Team to be the soundtrack to your, well, summer.
