This Hidden Switch – Trial and Error

By paul

THS remind me of a Bombed Out Records type band. They’ve kind of got the Leeds punk rock thing going on which I mean in a totally complementary way. They perhaps have a little more of a punk rock The Killerest Expression in them as well. Possibly. The band play melodic punk rock which, when they get it right, is absolutely brilliant. And they get it right more times than not over the course of ‘Trial and Error’. On ‘A New Regret’, for instance, they get it very, very right. It’s a driving rock song with fantastic vocals and a catchy chorus. The band try and replicate this success on most songs but the results aren’t quite as good – even if they’re still very enjoyable.

The riffs are chunky and solid on ‘Impulse Theory’, as they are on ‘The Ones’. The guitar tone is changed ever-so-slightly on ‘This Rain’ and the change of pace works a treat. It’s got a little bit of a Lucero feel to it too. This is my first taste of This Hidden Switch and I’m hoping it won’t be my last.
