Thoughts Collide – Sky High and Climbing

By paul

The way other media have spoken about this band I was expecting something groundbreaking and amazing. Thoughts Collide are good, but they’re not as good as a lot of others have made them out to be. Borrowing heavily from the likes of Thrice I’ll admit on first listen of ‘I Guess You Just Weren’t Built For This’ I did think I was going to be listening to something special. But as the record progresses through five songs you realise the band are good, but they’re not great. They’re not poppy enough to be as good as Lostprophets (so says Metal Hammer) and not heavy enough to rival Boy Sets Fire (Subba Cultcha). I’m also a little wary of unsigned bands courting publicity from Popworld…

Still, if you like Thrice I am certain you will like Thoughts Collide. The guitar work on ‘Give Me Your Voice’ is excellent and the vocals are very solid throughout. There’s technical ability in abundance and while TC will never come over as the most original act around they’ve certainly set firm foundations. Maybe I’m in the minority but I don’t quite think they’re in the same bracket as some of their press quotes would lead you to believe, but there’s enough promise to suggest the band are on the right lines. I await a full length with interest.
