Truman and His Trophy – Springinsguth

By paul

Quick review time – Truman and His Trophy hail from Chicago and play this unique brand of pop-punk and quirky indie that half works/half sounds a bit weird. At times the band come across like a weirder Weezer (if that’s possible) and the genuinely catchy songs such as ‘Tomato Feet’ are a lot of fun. There’s lots of instrumentation, hand claps and all the songs are busy. It’s primarily a fun record, but I liked it more in shorter doses – as an EP this would undoubtedly score a fair bit higher. The vocal delivery is a little kooky and different but it works, and while the keys could do with being a little higher in the mix they’re subtle enough to make a difference without taking control. ‘Springinsguth’ is a decent record and worth a listen, but I don’t think it will change the world.
