Twisted – Daydream EP

By paul

Six and a half minutes. In this day and age what do you get for six and a half minutes? One rock-opera Green Day song, maybe two pop-punk tunes, or, in the case of the ‘Daydream’ E.P. a whopping four tracks of Black Flag inspired gnarly hardcore punk.

Tracks one to three (titled ‘One’, ‘Two’, and ‘Three’ respectively) in fairness could be one extended song. It’s all late 70’s/early 80’s style punk with tinges of a hardcore element. Sacrificing precision for urgency, Twisted comes across as quick, no-nonsense, and passion-filled, managing to whip up a storm in the incredibly short period of time. From the vocals that are venomously spat out to the rolling drums, everything is delivered with pace, and lots of it.

Track four (yep, called ‘Four’) is a bit more of a structured affair, incorporating an extended intro (at least by the standards of the preceding songs) rather than a pistol quick out of the starting blocks vocal offensive. It’s a little more cautious, a little more easy-going on the listener. A nice change of pace that isn’t too drastic.

There’s the impression that Twisted is currently a band in transition (this record was recorded back in December with members of Facel Vega lending a hand for departed members) so ‘Daydream’ may prove to be a memento rather than a commodity to trade on. If that’s the case it’s not a bad little number in memorial. If not then it’s a decent enough starting point too. Nothing outstanding, nothing criminally detrimental, just good, simple, unexpecting punk music.
