We Came As Romans – To Plant A Seed

By paul

If I had a pound for every time I said I was bored of the ‘screamo’ genre I’d have a lot of pounds. I find the genre uninspiring and dull – there are very few bands coming out with anything resembling a sound that’s exciting and interesting. We Came As Romans at least give it a good stab. ‘To Plant A Seed‘ does fall into some of the cliched traps many other bands before them have also fallen into, but it does do things well in places. And it sounds absolutely massive – this is a very slick, well produced album that has multi-layered instrumentation which works real well. At times the band sound like Chiodos, at other they sound like a rave-less Enter Shikari, especially in the vocals.

And when the band get it right, as they do on the likes of ‘Beliefs’ and ‘Dreams’ they sound like world-beaters. My concern is that WCAR don’t do that often enough. While the samples and synth works well, too often the band resort to screaming their way through a track to make an impression. ‘I Will Not Reap Destruction’, for instance, could have been penned by any one of a million bands that litter a pretty uninspiring genre of music. It’s frustrating, because when this band are good, they’re bloody good. But all too often they slip into the shade of a million bands all chasing the same thing.
