Whisper The Image – Search The Land, Find A Plan

By paul

In places, Brighton’s Whisper The Image are the fucking business. Sounding like a more bloody and bruised Stories and Comets, these youngsters mix Misery Signals with Boys Night Out and come up with an aggressive, yet melodic, mix of brutality. There are technical guitar parts, breakdowns which don’t come across as generic or obvious and vocals which, to be honest, are better than most of the bands in this genre.

‘This Is’ is a fantastic little opener; a sub-two minutes track which mixes screaming vocals with a fantastic guitar riff. The electronica which buzzes in and out of ‘If Only You Were Somebody Else’ doesn’t sound at all forced or contrived, but it’s ‘The City Lights‘, which reminds me of Every Time I Die, that sticks out like a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean – a track which is as good as any UK band doing anything similar. The gang vocals are blinding, the riff fantastic – if you liked My Favourite Co-Pilot, well this is on a par with anything that band did.

At four songs it’s difficult to judge how good any band is and it’ll be interesting to see if WTI can maintain the good work here. Bands like Flood of Red seem to be getting a lot of kudos right now, but for me Whisper The Image are a lot better. Hopefully they’ll take the good parts of this EP back into the studio and come back with a second record that will show just how good this band really can be.
