Wires – Shadows

By Tom Aylott

This is WIRES’ second self-released EP and they claim to have ‘grand, yet realistic’ expectations. The Bristol based four piece have already received immensely positive reviews from their first EP ‘To Conquer The Waves’, and immediately upon launching into ‘Salve and Sting’ it’s blindingly obvious that ‘Shadows’ will be just as popular.

Vocalist Tom has a hell of a voice on him as well as being a stupidly talented writer. His lyrics provoke thought, and the slightly haunting yet still upbeat music accompanying them is the icing on the cake – it’s not often you come across a release that ensures you focus on the lyrics more than the music cushioning them.

‘Whispers’ brings a softer beginning to the track with the focus being on Tom’s voice and the underlying drums. Though reminiscent of bands such as KIDS IN GLASS HOUSES and YOUNG GUNS’ slower work, it might even be said that WIRES do it better – it’s atmospheric, has perfect composition and, if heard by someone ignorant to how new and relatively unestablished this band are, they could be easily mistaken for a band of much greater success.

The title track, ‘Shadows’, brings more haunting melodies, combined with a driving rhythm section that throws the track into its choruses. Tom’s vocals stretch to the odd shout and scream here, and combined with the intertwining guitar riffs and melodies it works incredibly well. WIRES deserve to be going places, and there’s no doubt that you’ll be hearing much more from them in 2012.
