Zero In – Black Hearts EP

By paul

Zero In are arguably the second best band to come out of Hull since Freaks Union. And yes, that includes the Beautiful South, who despite selling a gazillion records are, and always have been, shite. Zero In sound like a pissed off mix of AFI, Rise Against and Zero Down. Infact the Zero moniker actually confused me for a second. These guys are very good, however, and their spiteful, pissed off punk rock is a very welcome sound indeed. All six tracks are around the three-minute mark making maximum impact. The vocals rage and spit and the guitars and drums are mixed perfectly – for a demo this sounds pretty good indeed. ‘Capsized’ is shouty and energetic, while the opening riff of ‘theories of a destructive mind’ sets things up really nice before all hell breaks loose. Hull’s a pretty grim place, but it looks like Zero In may well be a shining light in an otherwise dark city.
